audacity should work from the mic input...if you're trying to record stereo or audio from a digital source, dvd, tv, etc. then need something like Sound Forge by Sony or there are probably other sites out there with some freeware. go to best buy, cdw or someplace like that and search for the software.

I used Music Match Jukebox to record from cassette decks to put my tapes on to CD. Give it a try. You may have to pay for a subscription.
