PLEASE-find this poor dog a forever home that can care for him properly. Leaving a dog outside in a crate all the time and especially in bad weather is abuse. Call your local animal control or humane society. They will be able to help you. You'll need to do alot of research before deciding to adopt an animal again. Remember these are living, breathing, loving creatures who deserve much better care than what you have described here.

Okay...This is what you need to do to fix these problems. On the worst possible night when it is very cold and raining or snowing very hard, you and your mother along with your alergies are to sleep outside with the dog. You can take as many extra blankets as you would like but when the become wet, you must keep them wrapped around you for warmth. No matter how horrible it gets outside you are not allowed to go inside...for anything. Any food and water as well as bathroom use are to be done out side as your dog must do and you both must remain their until 10:00(am) the following morning before you are allowed to go inside and when you go inside...so does the dog.
After the tree of you have dried and warmed yourselves enough, you'll see the results and I guarantee the results will be obvious. In some cases, the alergies are miraculously cured and a new understanding about the suffering fleas cause the animal, results in a mysterious avenue to obtain the necessary medicines appears. Most people have a vision or some new found knowledge about actually having enough responsibility to do the things necessary for taking care of this animal that they claim to love. They are amazed to learn that a bath and brushing the dog as well as simple comfort is very, very easy to include in daily activities. It occurs to them that this dog has actual feelings and emotions and to include the dog in the family means that they "should..include" the dogs standard of living as being as important as any family member.
If this is not the way you and your mom benefit from the experiment then I promise you will recognize that this animal needs to live with someone responsible enough to give him these considerations and that you have made a terrible mistake in letting this dog suffer. That you don't even have the courage to suffer a little bit and instead make the dog suffer a lot.
If the results of this test are not crystal clear after this experiment then you are entitled to a full refund but there has never been a petition for a return.

I do agree with everyone. You need to find him a home where he will get the proper care that he needs. Sometimes things change in people finances that they can't help. You did not say how old you were, but you do sound like you want to do the right thing by your puppy. Have you tried to earn some money, ask your neighbors if they have any odd jobs that you could do and tell them why your trying to earn money. Of course talk this over with your mom. Call your local spca, some have programs for low income people (nothing to be ashamed of). If you don't get his fleas treated then he's going to end up with worms also. Call a vets office they might be able to help you too. doesn't hurt to ask. good luck to you and your dog.

This is a tough situation. Sometimes its hard to place the dog's welfare ahead of your own feelings. There are monthly medications that can be used to kill and prevent fleas from infesting. Fleas carry parasites that can infect your dog's intestines when he scratches by biting. It is a pretty vicious cycle but it is curable. His smell may be related to several factors, namely the length of his coat, the cleanliness of his sleeping quarters and whether you brush him or not. If you are keeping him in a pen all the time, then chances are he is sleeping on soiled bedding. This is really unfair to him and it makes you feel bad. It may be time to consider finding him a home with someone who had the resources to care for him properly. Owning and caring for a dog properly can be expensive sometimes. Vaccinations, grooming, dental cleanings, exams with x-rays...it all adds up and if the budget is really tight, something ends up not being resolved. Unfortunately it usually is the dog. Maybe you know someone who would like to have a dog to care for the way you would want to care for him if you could. Talk with your local pet adoption agency, SPCA, or pet rescue. They will normally be able to help you get started in the right direction. Good luck.

For keeping him outside- as long as he has adequate shelter inside that pen (a house that he can get away from the elements and stay dry and warm) as well as getting some outside running/ walking around time- that is perfectly fine. We have outside dogs as well, I don't know why people are so against it, and they are extremely happy and cry to go back outside whenever they are in the house. We have checked on them in below zero weather - they pulled out all of the hay from their house and it was still warmer than my house!
flea baths are pretty cheap, same with flea collars under $5 usually .If you can not afford even that, you probably should not be owning a dog. Letting fleas stay on a dog can be considered a form of abuse.
As for stinkiness- most outside dogs are a little stronger in their odor. You can give him baths, but, b/c he is an outside dog, esp if he has thicker fur, he will probably always have that strong odor.
Please get that flea problem fixed though- that it itchy and miserable for the dog (and can also attribute to odor).

You really need to get that poor dog a dog house because to just put him in a cage without good protection from the weather could be considered animal cruelty. I know that you're on a budget, so look in the paper and see if you can find a dog house that someone is trying to get rid of and maybe it will be cheaper than if you went to a pet store or wal-mart or some place like that.

You are not doing enough for your dog!!At least get big Garbage can and lay it on its side away from the cold wind.Fill it with old clothes or rags, anything.Put the can as close to the house as you can and that will help shield him from the elements. You can clean the tub after washing your Dog even if you have to climb inside to do it!!!!!However if you can go to Walmart Or Pet Co or Pets Mart and get Frontline Plus or Hearts drops that go on the back of the neck.If it is cold there nowI wouldn't keep washing him until spring. You could give him a cold or worse. If you can keep him inside use Dawn Dishwashing Detergent to wash him and soap him up really good and leave it on him about 5-10 minutes then rinse him off.Maybe repeat. For the odor you can use a cupful of Lysol in the water or a cap of Clorox just don't let him drink any of the water. Then clean up your mess,You can make the tub good as new !!!!!!!Do one of these things please and save your puppy from torture!!!puppys need love and care!!

It's not right to make a dog stay outside when the weather is bad.
The dog needs flea/tick meds and it deserves a bath at least once a week.
Maybe you can find him another home. I understand about the budget, animals can be expensive, I have 2 of them...
Sounds as though you and your mom are allergic to dogs....
Blessings!

use lemon joy- that kills all fleas immediently, then you go to the vet and for like $8.00 or $5.00 there is a pill called cap star- it will kill the remaining fleas in 5 minutes, the only way to keep fleas off is to use advantage and the tube should be like $12.00 depending on the size- but if you have no money then lemon joy once a week should be suffient enough- if it's to cold then use the tub and do your best to clean up hairs, its not fair to have a dog and have him coverd in fleas, he will scratch and scratch, untill his skin gets so raw it's infected- so just have to make due- but the lemon joy will help! I used to be a vet tech-

Honestly, you should find your dog a new home. It is cruel to leave a dog outside in a cage in cold, severe weather and might be in violation of animal cruelty laws. If you don't have the money to treat fleas properly or time or inclination to bathe the dog when he needs it and you are both allergic, you shouldn't own the dog. For his sake, find him a new home where he will be treated properly.
