Charities should be registered with the Secretary of State's office. They will have a listing.

When donating to a charity, evaluate what their overhead is. If they only give 3% to their cause, you can presume that it is a front for the owner to line his pocket.

A good organization will have an overhead less than 60%.

Type in Publication 78 on any search engine. That will take you to the IRS's listings of ALL 501(c)3 NonProfit charities.

If you are interested in a particular area (animal rescue, heart association, things like that), do a search under that name, and add New York to the search parameters.
