The Make A Wish foundation is good - giving terminally ill children a special time with their families in the midst of tragedy.
Compassion International - allows impoverished children worldwide to get vaccinations, food, clothing or go to school. They are above board too- very little monies raised goes to "administration costs"
Both can be done without further commitment and anonymously if you choose.
The Ronald McDonald houses are great too - when family members are in critical care, they provide families a place to stay while patient is getting treatment.

I dont want to be selfish but you could donate it to me,My 11 year old son and I lost our home dec. 10th to a fire.Everything we owned was destroyed. The fire marshall said the fire started at the cilco meter and my neighbor actually witnessed it, she siad there was a ball of fire in the meter and then in a matter of a few seconds my whole house was in flames.Exactly one month before the fire my insurance adjuster came out and cancelled my ins. due to the dog i owned wich was a rottweiler,i guess they will not insure you with that kind of dog,so i figured o.k im real safe we will wait till after christmas and i can get insured with someone else, well that never happened.I am having a benefit feb.24th to raise money to get my house back together,as i cannot afford 450 for rent and my gas bill has trippled because i had to find a home so my son and I could have a place for christmas. My community has been wonderful they helped us with clothe and food but we would like to go home.Every little bit counts and I would appreciate any donation, it is also tax deductible as I have a tax i.d # incase people wanted to donate. Thankyou Maranda

I would go and investigate any sort of charity you're giving to; see what the percentage is that gets to the ones that need it. If I remember right, the United Way got pinched several years ago when the CEO had gotten busted for his huge bank account. Like the other person said, keep it local; the food bank, the youth center, etc. If it were my money, I'd feel best about that.

Any Ronald McDonald House is a good Charity. Look up information on us on the internet. All donations go toward operating the house where families stay while children are in the hospital.

To the American Cancer Society: They use their funds for cancer education and legislative reform to eliminate smoking.
The American Red Croos: They are a large organization involved in education (CPR, Swimming Safety and Disaster Planning), support during a tragedy both large and small (I was just made aware that the American Cross has a representative associated with Fire Depts. throughout the country to provide assistance to people who lose the belongings to a fire and they also act as the notifying organization to our American Troops when a member of the Soldier's family dies.

There are a lot of good charities out there - find one that is close to your heart. I like The Chicago Food Pantry, Little Brothers, American Heart, Anti-Cruelty, and American Veterans.

There are probably loads of battered womens shelters and homeless kid shelters in your area you could donate to, every bit of money counts.
