well , for the most part when a woman of mature age has curly hair she has it permed and then wet set on rollers ( go get a this done is a pain and take all day .. think tight perm( its usally very tight ) under the dryer to process , then rinse , then lil cut , then putting it all in mag rollers ( smooth plastic kind) then under the dryer for up to a hour .. it takes time to get those looks and for the most part woman of today won't or can't take the time ( not that its their fault )
also a hair net when you sleep and a pic and some good hair spray will help in the morining .. a tight curl to start with will give a better set or end result .. go to a old ladie salon .. get a set and see how you like it
also once you damage , hair once it grows its new and fresh .. so the person who said 75 years of perms and colours .. well if there hair is p[ast thee ankles thgen yes , if not its all new FYI

Older ladies often have a very tight perm, which pretty much stays put through anything. Often they have it washed and set once a week and sprayed, and it stays that way till the next weekly appt. Not to say that you should do this, but do you have a perm? If not, you could try that, not a really tight one but just enough to give it some shape and then you just need to get it damp in the am. and it should pop back up. Good luck!

Some young people's hair also look flat even when they put curls in it. The difference is in the texture; thin hair tend to be more resistent to the curling. Thick hair usually curls better. Invest in an curling iron.

I'm an old woman (51) and I have to loosely braid my long hair so it doesn't tangle while I sleep. My mother used to wrap her head with this foam thing bought on those racks at the drug store with the shower caps. It looked stupid but it held her hair in place.

because their hair is old and damaged most of the time. Think of a new baby's hair and trying to do that with no color on it, no products used ever and then think of 75 years of damage to cover up grays, perms, etc. Their hair is soo damaged. It's like sandpaper.

I remember when my mum went to the hairdressers and had her hair set she would sleep with a scarf over her hair. The next morning she only neeed to touch up her hair do.
Personally I couldn't imagine doing that myself but hey it worked for her.

Gray hairs are thick and stiff & have a natural curl to them.
You could use dynamite & they wont straighten.
