he was chewing on a bone which broke and before I could get to him he swallowed a small piece - it did not get stuck but he did go very quite for the rest of the evening and a bit sleepy. He slept ok last night and seemed his usual self today. Will it just pass through him or should he visit the vet?

Watch for bloody stool. It can scratch the instinal walls and sometimes can be fatal.

I have Jack too, very naughty and one time he swallowed so much bones from the neighbours house after a party that he could not excrete. He was in so much pain that have to bring him to vet and dilute the stool.
If one bone is ok but watch out for blood stool due to cut by the splinters.
If not sure better bring it the vet for second opinion.

no. If he is already dominant, imagine 2 terriers together , both dominant, and a fight breaks out. Coming home to blood splattered walls and a dead dog isn't funny. It sounds like you need to conmcentrate on the dog you have and start doing some proper training with him to solve the issues he has now which will only get worse as his hormones kick in. If you are leaving him alone for long long hours while you are at work, then you should not have got him in the first place.

Jack Russells are notorious for doing things like this!! I have two of the little buggers, and one of them in particular is forever finding things to eat. I took them to the park a few weeks ago, and one of them had a poo. A passerby was quite near and as i bent down to pick it up i saw something shining - he had obviously eaten something belonging to one of my daughters but it looked like his poo was hung in diamonds!! The passerby was quite amused by this!

Anyhow - lamb bones are much safer than chicken bones to eat so he should pass it through ok. Keep an eye on him, but if he is acting normally then i doubt there is anything wrong.

Just watch him for vomiting, should pass those bones don't splinter, you could check at a site called www.vet-doctor.com if you are concerned.Good Luck!
