Hindi and Urdu are very similar, but Gujarati is very different. Urdu was the language of the Moghuls, and thus is spoken over the majority of the subcontinent, where they ruled. Pure Hindi is a bit difficult to understand for Urdu speakers, but everyday Hindi has a lot of Urdu words. In script they are both very different. Urdu is based on the Arabic script whereas Hindi is based on Sanskrit script (I think).

Hindi and Urdu sound almost exactly the same.

But their scripts are completely different. Urdu is written in the Farsi script, similar to Arabic.

Gujarati is a bit similar to Hindi, shares many words, and is yet quite different from Hindi. Most Gujaratis do understand Hindi and can usually speak it...
But people who know only Hindi can have a little difficulty understanding Gujarati.

So, anyone who knows Hindi, understands Urdu, and who knows Urdu, understands Hindi. Gujarati speakers will usually understand Hindi and Urdu.

You said your friend is Pakistani. Pakistan also has a district called Gujrat. Maybe your friend was one of the Gujarati muslims who crossed the border in the partition. Maybe he knows Sindhi, which sounds a bit similar to Gujarati, and is spoken in Pakistan and areas of Gujarat.

Urdu and Hindi are almost the same. Hindi has more Sanskrit words, while Urdu has more Farsi and Arabic words. Gujarati is somewhat different, although it has words in common with these two languages. Gujarati also has words common with Bangla and Sindhi languages. In fact, all the languages of the Indo- Pak subcontinent are similar. Their root languages are the same.
