I am a stylist, and I swear by Aveda Control Paste. Out of all the products I've tried, I feel this to be the least heavy on the hair, as other products tend to weigh the hair down and get "dirty" looking. I use the tiniest bit (scoop in up on your finger nail so it only covers the tip (1/10 of a dime size). Work it into your hands really well and run your hands through your hair from the underneath of your hair and out running your fingers through. Now you can use what is remaining on your fingers to separate any more layers you want to see clearly defined. You can twist these layers, or just keep running fingers through only the ends of your hair, and you got your look. Love it! Promise you won't be disappointed.

There is a great product by Bedhead called "Manipulator," which is described as: "A fiber-forming texturizing cream that manipulates hair into multiple shapes." My hair stylist suggested this product for the exact look you are trying to achieve: piecey, and it works great! Its an industry leader and can be found in many drugstores such as Walgreens and CVS, also online at www.amazon.com and www.drugstore.com. Its the best! Its blue and comes in a round container.

Also available on the site below.

Redken has a great foam wax product, just apply throuought hair and dry and flat iron, and then apply some more to the areas you really need to stay put.

you can try a texturizer product but your best bet is to find a hairdresser that does razor cuts -- they cut your hair with a straight razor to add the texture -- oh and stop combing and brushing it. this only works with shorter hair. with longer hair you have to brush it and then wash it to make sure your hair doesn't knot up.

Straighten it in layers.
You could try adding some wax or gel.
