definitely crate him, we also have a bassett hound (4 years old now) trust me there is no such thing as a safe room with a puppy. Plus using a crate is the easiest way to house train.

is there any way that some one can come home at lunch to let the puppyk out to potty. 6 hours is a long time for a 9 week to go in a crate with out getting to go potty. do you have any body in town that does day care you might look in to that.

6 hours is too long for a puppy that age to be alone. You cant expect him to be happy and get housebroken that way. Hire a petsitter or find him a new home with people that can dedicate the time needed.

I would use a crate. It gives the dog a den for further use. My lab loves her crate.

Six hours is far too long to leave such a young puppy alone. He can't possibly control his bladder that long.
