With a gas mask?
Leave some mints on his desk, when he isn't there. Do that a few days in a row. Hopefully he will take the hint.
Other than that, there isn't anything else you can do unless you want to confront him.
Best of luck.

You cant avoid the person, but perhaps you could have a bowl of mints on your desk. You eat one and offer one to the co-worker when you take one. He may or may not take you up on it, but the longer you have them out in the open, and the more times you offer (keep the offers to like one or two a day, making sure YOU take one each time...), the more likely he is to tkae you up on your sharing of the 'treats.' :-)

I would take out a pack of gum and pop it into my mouth, then I would offer him a piece. If that didn't work I would go to the boss and ask to be transferred to another part of the office. Hope it Helps : D

You probably can't avoid him totally so just keep gum and mints with you and offer him one every day. Maybe he'll get the hint. If some one offered me one I would accept it with the thought that maybe I had bad breath.

But a bowl of mints on your desk.
Get up a couple times a day and (noisily) mention you are going to brush your teeth.
Carry Listerine strips in your pocket and anytime you have to talk to him pull it out put one in your mouth and offer one to him.
Spray your cologne/perfume on a handkerchief and anytime he starts to spray his stinky breath all over you, pull it out and hold it under your nose. Tell him you have allergies.
Tough situation. You can try talking to your boss about it but most people will not bring up a personal issue such as this.
Good luck

Offer him a stick of gum and advise him on his little problem. Maybe suggest things, such as the gum or mouthwash that can help. Don't insult him because of it or create a big fuss in the office.

you may not be able to avoid it since they "office" so close to you..
keep your head turned to one side and breathe through your mouth, that will help during the odd moments you have to speak to them...
and if worst comes to worst, talk to the HR people, they can politely and privately say to this person that several people (i'm sure you're not the only one) have commented about their bad breath and they suggest seeing a professional about it

When I was younger, for some reason I didn't understand the value of deodorant.
A co-worker took me aside a explained the importance of deodorant to me.
I was mortified, but also very grateful.
Do him and yourself and everyone else in the office, hell everyone else in the word a favor, tell him.

Instead, ask him if he want some gum or a mint. If any one evers offers you this, you are supposed to take it, so maybe that person will take the hint. If my breath stunk, I would hope someone would tell me.
