It is simply human to fear the unknown.
Death is THE biggest unknown entity. No one has ever come back to report about it, no one has mapped it out nor described it vividly, no log ins, journals etc to prove the great afterlife. No websites that connect to it nor there is any live telecast.
It continues to haunt the conscience of the staunchest nonbeliever and similarly pose doubts to believer.
If there is a God and that God is Most Fair, the afterlife is only logical as the place for rewards and retributions which all living things miss out while living in this world.
If there is a God, that is.

It is not the dying that scares so many people, it is the unknown. We all like to have a clear map of where we are going. We do not like change or the uncertainty of not knowing. We are afraid of perhaps there being physical pain when we die. We are afraid that it is a journey we take alone.
Our faith in Jesus tells us not to be afraid. He is with us now and will not leave us when we die.
People of faith have that hope to take with them on their final journey.
Religion still means a lot to people. Adults are still being Baptized or are looking into religious instruction for themselves or for their children.

Indeed, the uncertainty of after = fear (hath torment).
So the objective isn't believe, but "know": John 8:32.
"Know" the truth makes you free of "believe" the lies.
Not to mention Devils "believe": James 2:19

Not to mention great least of great->greater->greatest,
and allegorically as babe is least of babe->child->man.

Law was great, but notably a "great terror": Deut 34:12.
Law was also a schoolmaster that failed every student.
http://www.godshew.org/Law.htm
Life(Grace) + Death(Law) = A DEAD End.
No such dead end mentioned in "the end":
The GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ with you all. Amen.

For the same reason people are afraid of dentists :-)
They assure us that there's great life after dentist, and yet when we hear the drill buzzing we are still scared for no apparent reason...

Because it is human nature. First most people are not 100% certain of what lies beyond the veil of death. Secondly, we come into this world crying it would make sense that we leave it that way.

We are scared of the unknown. And some of us are scared of the actual experience of death. Plus it is human instinct to want to survive. Even those who wish to die, when they are faced with a life threatening situation, will fight to survive.
