families of breeding often felt the need to demonstrate their bloodline as equal to that of those of the grooms family.
the simplest way was to have both.

If a family (usually influentual) had no son to carry on the family name, it was common for a son-in-law to take the wife's maiden name (usually for some financial or other gain)
If his name was Brown and her name Green the surname would be Green-Brown, separated by a hyphen, which indicates that it is two surnames.
The Welsh have a slightly different tradition and this was to differentiate between the more limited surnames available, such that they would use a middle name as part of a double barrelled surname,
So as an example a Mr Thomas Glyn Jones would be christened Thomas Glyn but be known as Mr Glyn Jones.
Note that here the hyphen is not used, as it is one christian name and one surname.
Mr Glyn Jones wife would also be known as Mrs Glyn Jones, even though she had never been babtised "Glyn"

When a family has only female children, the family name disappears when they get married and take the husbands surname. The only way around this before deed pole became available is to use both his and her surnames together with a hyphen in between.

My mum does family history stuff and she always says originally it used to be when a child was born "out of marriage". The mother would then use her and the father's surnames.
