When i do Tai Chi after about 10 minutes i start crying. Like total release. Happy crying. Sobbing.
I have this happen in class setting and it puts me off. I don't do classes no more.
Now i bought the video and want to try on my own. But the emotional release puts me off. It is very intense. Not sure how to deal with it either.
Where is the emotional release coming from?
Can anyone explain it from an energetics point of view please? Maybe if i can understand it becomes easier to deal with. Cheers :-)

Can't believe the counsellor gets mentioned in the first answer! If i wanted that kind of answer i would've put it in psychology. As it goes, i prefer the smile and you are a very kind person comment i got off my chinese Tui Na practitioner!

Perhaps it is due to the amount of endorphins (happy hormones) that your body is releasing when you do your tai chi workout. By the sound of it, it really seems to de-stress you. On the other hand if it is DIStressing to you it might be more helpful to make your workout shorter then gradually extend it as your tolerance builds.

Hi there

Firstly although not common its nothing to be ashamed about. In fact its quite honourable.
It could be down to lots of things but its definitely psychology.
If you think that the mind controls the body then the same can be true but in reverse. A lot of Koryu Japanese martial arts are based around Mikkyo and Chinto and both use meditation to enhance this sort of feeling. Certain stances and moves will be probably linked to some other emotion good or bad. These will act as a trigger a bit like when people think about having sex which creates changes in the body. Many boxers also say that when they put there gloves on their state of mind changes. The right sort of feeling with the right kamae can help when dealing with confrontations.

So what you need to work out is trigger?

My advise is to try and control it if possible but if its too extreme then its always best to seek advice from a professional and this depends on what works for you.

Regards

Idai

I was on retreat with FWB (friends of western Buddhists) order and heard of the 'beginners mind' where a new start to meditation can punch right through to what we try to get out of this practise first time. Think this is happening with you, your progress has been ballistic (high in a very short time) and I think it will soon settle into a normal rate of progression. The tears will soon dry up and you will enjoy your classes again, as to were it is coming from no idea, but happy for you that it is being released. Hope this helps, it is a little long answer than I actually prefer to give

It could be coming from any number of sources. For some the sense of peace that they associate with activities like martial arts can be very healing and cleansing. That can, if it exists in stark contrast to daily life, lead to overwhelming feelings of joy and/or tears. I've heard that it isn't totally uncommon for people to cry during meditation, so this could be a similar case.

It could be that by tuning into your body's chi and getting in touch with yourself you are bringing up older feelings, sensations that have been repressed and are now being released. Sometimes we repress our emotions just to deal with everyday life. When we slow down and do something for ourselves these feelings can come out in unexpected ways.

You might want to speak with a councilor to try and find where these feelings come from and get them off your chest. For now, continue doing your tai chi at home and try to do it often until you feel more peaceful in your daily life.

hi there...
hope your ok today. i wouldnt worry about crying after a session. yeah it might be a little off putting... but people react to things differently. like one person said... its just a natural response... your feeling something so intense. id be so happy if i could feel like that. like toaism says... only when you learn your self will things become clear. learn to accpet it, dont be embarrassed about it. when i walk into the dojo in my martial arts class i feel an overwhelming ache all over my body as i k.now thats what its going to feel like when im in the same place exactly an hour later. yet i still go in... i learn to try and harness that feeling and try control it...but its there all the same. theres nothing particulaly that you can do to stop crying as such. i just accept it, ont deny your body the happyness.

I wish i was as privilaged as you to get such feeling of elation. but i still keep walking forward.

i also study psychology so i know about the chemical balances and the psychological aspects behind it. but somethings cannot and should not be explainable.

enjoy it i say... embarce it and dont be put off by how people treat you... its only bad karma on their behalf

enjoy your practice

if your worried about it i believ if you ever read a book on taoism quotes you will understand a little more about accpeting who you are. not suggeting you arent accpeting... just that your not alone out there...

enjoy

x

it's most likely from holding in or controlling emotiions throughout your life.

this leads to a stagnation of energy...especially in the solar plexus point (ren17?).

your practice is moving energy that is stagnant on a deeper level than just cold hands/feet.

i've had similar things happen from acupuncture and massage, and my kung fu brother is going through something very similar when he practices qi gung.

the advice i've heard my shifu give is to understand it is a process of releasing deeply stored emotions, to allow it to happen and to feel happy that such stagnation is being cleared out.

From a strictly physical/biological standpoint, I would suggest that the emoition release it from an overwhelming rush of endorphins.

You probably hate tai chi therefore start crying every time you do it.I suggest you stop doing tai chi!
