Hi Zoe,

The name Zoe is rather lovely - it means the spirit of life, but in all its benign forms. Whether or not there's a line or a double dot over the final e depends on (i) whether the writer knows about it, and (ii) whether the writer can achieve it on their word-processor. Since most people can't do the latter, gradually the line/double dot seems to have been dropped - in the same way as some French accents get dropped when people type them in English, especially in a format like this one which doesn't allow you to access special symbols. The name comes (I'm almost certain) from the Greek, and - to repeat - is very beautiful in meaning.

My little girl is called Zoe and she is three years old.
We have a dot dot above the e, not for any reason other than I really liked it! I don't think that it means anything as Zoe Lucker from footballers wives has the dot dot above the o.

The boy's and girl's name Zoe \zoe\ is pronounced ZOH-ee, ZOH. It is of Greek origin, and its meaning is "life". Zooey is a variant from J.D. Salinger's novel "Frannie and Zooey", although the character Zooey is a young man named Zachery. Popular in Greece. Actresses Zoe Caldwell, Zooey Deschanel.

Zoe has 7 variant forms: Zoee, Zoelie, Zoeline, Zoelle, Zoey, Zoie and Zoya.

think putting an E with an accent (é) just means that it has french roots.

It's not a line but two dots, side by side. In German it's called an umlaut and changes the pronunciation of the two vowels together.
However, in many languages it is used to show that the two vowels should be pronounced separately. Without it, Zoe would rhyme with Joe.

i think its cruel and selfish to name a child a non conformist and unique name. he/she will be stuck trying to explain it for their entire life and often be picked on or ridiculed.
