I'm not so sure one can be tragic without being pathetic. I mean, tragic is surely the better thing to be, it implies that awful things have happened and so you are no longer in control of what is going on to you, it's not your fault e.g. 'Oh, her husband died and she has not left the house since - it is entirely tragic'. But pathetic implies that you are still in control of your life, but are letting it get to you more than it should, e.g. 'Oh, she got dumped by her boyfriend and has spent the last 3 weeks sitting in her apartment eating Ice Cream'. But, it seems to me that tradgedy normally also involves one being pathetic - not having the bull to get up and deal with things.
Not to say you don't get true tragedy, but it always comes with a side-serving of pathetic. Similarly, being pathetic always comes hand in hand with a little tragedy!
That is all.

p.s. I'll go for tragic, thank you very much!

Tragedy has nothing to do with 9/11 Read the followings and you decide for yourself
A tragic hero is one who, on his own volition, attempts to attain or protect a value despite the fact that he knows he is risking his life to that end and loses his or her life during that risky struggle for the value which he sees to be higher than his or her own life.
Read carefully and decide if it is the suicidal bombers or the Americans experienced a tragedy
Let me sort out the characteristics for you:
He should be well informed about his situation.
He should deliberately attempt to accomplish a virtuous act.
He must be sane to risk his life in exchange of the value he seeks for.
He must lose his life or a precious asset in his life or he must suffer at the end of his action.
If somebody tells you something different about what tragedy is, just spit at his or her face...
If you have any further question to ask, just ask me....
"Nietzche and Hegel are "nobodies" for me in this respect" ....
Aristotle as far as the poetics is concerned is not even a "nobody"
Tragic flaw is misjudgement or miscalculation. It is a slight error which wouldnt otherwise make a tragic person a base one. But a true tragic hero doesnt need to have a tragic flaw at all. Does Antigone have a tragic flaw? NOOOO... What about Oedipus? NOOOOO...

pathetic. i believe i learned in shakespeare what a tragic figure was. you had to be someone of greatness who comes down. little people just pathetic so that make me pathetic since i am, indeed a fallen man, although i didn't have far to fall. just thought i did. just a self-deluded piece of **** who got his come-upance when he had a four-way bypass, repossessed car and repossessed and a paid-for little cottage on five acres that burned last year. so i have weighed a slug in the head for all the setbacks and waited, waited and waited and thunk and thunk until i changed my mind. hell, what does it all amount to, really? everybody on earth has to go sometime. had nothing coming into this tough world won't take anything out. like you all know. so keep walking on , breathing and find a way until god gives you a little shove over the cliff. it will come soon enough.
