Last year I worked and made about $2500. Do I have to file taxes? I read somewhere that if you worked for a company and made below about $5000, then you are not required to file taxes. Additionally, college students who have work study jobs are also issued W2 forms. In all, I only made at most $4000, do I have to file taxes this year?

ssuming you are single you can earn up to $5,150 in salary/wages and not pay any tax. If you had taxes withheld from your wages you would need to file to get a refund of those taxes. If no taxes were withheld then you don't even have to file a return if you only made $4,000 for the year.

A single person who is not claimed as a dependent by another taxpayer does not need to file a return if they had income of less than $8450 for 2006. However, if any income tax was withheld from your wages you must file a return in order to receive a refund of those taxes.

The normal answer is no, you don't have to, but if your employer deducted (withheld) taxes, then to get the money back, you have to file at least a 1040EZ.
