Find some old pictures of him and co-workers and make a picture collage. It would be great to find some old friends he hasn't seen in years to be there and surprise him. Get his
closest friends to do a comedy toast like the celebrities do.
For a return gift, give little boxes of chocolates with a thank you note attached.

It will be hard to surprise him if he's giving his own party. The true way to surprise someone is for someone or thing unexpected to appear.Has he invited or wanted someone to come, that can't make it?Someone that would bring special memories to the party that you can invite without his knowledge?A gift for him would be a good gold piece, watch, bracelet,or necklace with something engraved on it.For the family a photo of him (maybe wife) that says I(we) made it!Then put the retirement date on the frame.Pictures are always a plus for family.Really would be funny if everyone that had one would stand up one at a time and tell everyone some of his Bombs....Like a roast....

I am in love with giving engraved gifts. I gave my boyfriend a flask with his initails on it for his birthday last year. This Christmas I gave my brother cuff links that were initialed. Depending on what his job was you can go in a better direction. Good luck =)
