Walking on them. ha ha

If everything squeaks, then it is shoddy construction.
The nails that keep the floor board is loose and that creates the sound.Ther should be a plywood subfloor, then a particle board, then resilient flooring (boards) or tiles or carpeting over the 2 floor layers nailed to floor joists.
As the house age, the foundation may have shifted a bit, and the house shifts and settles. A few nails will fix the problem. or change the floor of the stairs.
PS- dont hire the same man who did the flooring the first time around.

Loose boards rubbing against each other. As you are renting and don't want to spend your time mending their house try shaking your talcum powder down the cracks in between the boards. I find it works.

As most of the people have said it is loose boards and they simply want screwing down but what noone seems to have mentioned is check whats under them before you refasten them (plumbers may have notched the tops of the joists and laid pipes under them) the last thing you want is to screw through a water pipe!

Loose boards rubbing together. You can fix this easily by hammering a wood wedge into the gaps to tighten them up. you can buy the wedges at a hardware store for 1 or 2 dollars.

on the stairs ..the wedges have shrunk or have come loose..difficult to fix as they are under boarded ..the floors have insufficient nails .this is all so difficult as there is normally pipes under the floor ..try fixing screws next to existing nails ..but beware !

It is most probably where boards have been taken up for central heating pipes or electric cables, and haven't been nailed down properly. The only remedy, is to take the boards up and re-fix them.

wood rubbing on wood or sometimes nails because it's not securely joined, and moves enough to rub in a way that makes sound vibration.
