make sure the timing belt has been replaced, if not get it replaced soon after getting the vehicle. i have seen lots of these timing belts fail as the cars get older. if the belt fails it will wipe out all of the valves and that is a very expensive repair. other than that there are not too many major problems with the 1999
1.8t's.

Awesome car, but beware the dreaded, recalled "ignition coil" that most all of the 150hp turbo VWs had for a few years. Make certain the coil was replaced under warranty, or expect some ignition problems.
Otherwise, those I know that have had a Mk4 Turbo absolutely loved them to death. A bit on the pudgy side, so it's not as tossable as your Mk1, but still lots of fun, hehe.
I had a new Mk4 Golf GLS that was totally trouble-free, except for the mirror-adjust knob that easily breaks off. Replaced under warranty. I've still got my Mk1 GTI [1983, first year made in the US] that I bought in 1988. Unmolested, shiny and fully intact :) Gotta love the bunny.
Good luck~

Why dont you go for the 1.8 GTi 180hp. Its the 25th aniversary edition, which is mega money, but i think you can get the same engine/hp in another mk4 golf. Dont get the 150hp if you can afford the 180hp. Both turbo but the 25th aniversary has a body kit and 18'' BBS alloys as standard. I'm looking into that one myself!

Besides a chip upgrade invest in a turbo timer. It will prolong your turbo's life when you decide to romp on it or take long trips in the car every once in a while. Other than that they rock. Good luck.

a vauxhall diesel van geos faster. i know the wv's have a good following. but cars of that era are far far to slow and heavy. buy a nrand new gti. they are better. failing that get an mk1, they are also faster than the blob you want to buy... and wont loose any resale value

i won't be able to stand the slamming of doorways...it extremely is one helpful way of having me truly p1ssed off. for the time of her teenager years, my daughter did it as quickly as too in many situations, so I had her door bumped off, (purely for a quick time). We lived in a brick living house for crying out loud and he or she could slam that door so demanding, the living house could shudder!

if it's a Mk 4 don't bother. Do you not watch top gear they had a drag race with one and it was beaten by a skoda - a diesel estate i think! I'd sooner have a clio williams

If its been looked after then you shouldn't have any problems.
First thing to do when you get it is get it chipped! For £300 AMD will chip it up to 180BHP.
I'll bet you can't get a 180BHP version for £300 more than an identical 150BHP version.
