I would recomend changing the belt every 60-80.k km. Or 50.k miles. I would at least begin to check the condition of the belt with every service at that mileage. I would not risk an interference engine to save mileage on a timing belt. I would check with your nearest VW dealership.

I change my 97 jetta's every 70,000 miles as per the VW recommendation. I also change the water pump at the same time. Look in your manual and see what the recommendation is. I also take my car to an independant shop, vs. the Stealership as it's less expensive.

Varies from model-to-model. Check your owner's manual for the service intervals, or if that's not easy, google-search for a VW dealership in your city or town, call the service department and they will tell you in 10 seconds.
My '03 Eurovan VR6 24v isn't due for a timing belt until like 105,000 miles!
