I'm 20 years old and have had my braces off since I was 14; I've worn my retainer every night to bed(religiously). My dentist has never told me to stop using the retainer, but I'm wondering if anyone knows if my teeth would shift drastically if I just stopped wearing the retainer all at once. I don't want to be 40 years old and still putting in my mouthpiece when I go to bed....

I got mine off when I was 14 too- I stoped wearing it when I was 17, My teeth did shift, I mean they didn't go back to the way they where, they just-... spaced out a little. everyone insits that im imagining it- but to me, they look different.

after i noticed they had moved and i tried to put my retainer back in- it wouldn't fit. I agree with the person above me, I think if you wear it a few days a week you'll be okay.

I stop wearing my retainer when I was 19 after two years of wearing it. I am 26 and my teeth have shifted back some. I say keep wearing it at least a couple nights a week better safe than sorry.

Try skipping a couple of nights. If you can't tell a difference, skip a week. Still no difference? Just try it in occasionally to see if the teeth seem to be moving.

Just remember that if you haven't had your wisdom teeth removed, they could cause some movement issues.

the dentist should tell you until when you need to put those on. you can sue her for negligence if she won't tell you.
