It depends upon the rest of his record. If there are no other arrests/convictions, the one DUI would probably not disqualify him from obtaining a "green card," or obtain lawful permanent residence status.

There are a few ways of obtaining LPR status:

Through a family member;
Through a business sponser;
By a finding of asylum;
Being a national of a specific country, i.e. Cuba;
Being a fiance of a citizen...

It won't affect as DUI is not a CIMT. Lot of people with H1B went out of country for stamping...got married and brought their spouses also to USA. It will also not matter with citizenship. Good luck.
