It would be better spending money on upgrading your laptop rather that going back to an older version of windows. Many new programs and hardware is not compatible with the Windows 9x series. If XP is sluggish on your system it would be a good idea to add more memory. Have at least 1 GB of ram for XP.

You need the Windows 98 cds first + a key. Once that's done, you need to format your C drive and wipe Windows XP off of it (because you can't downgrade your OS. The people at microsoft didn't think it made sense so you can only upgrade). Once you've wiped it, start up your computer with windows 98 and boot from there. Then it's a simple install and you've got windows 98.

I guess that your reason is the XP runs very, very slowly on PCs. As pointed out, you cannot install Win98 unless you get rid of XP. But to get rid of XP you will also need to re-partition the drive to FAT32 (or FAT) because Win98 does not install to NTFS partitions, which XP uses. You will find the tools on the Win98 CDs which you will have to get from somewhere. Not many Computer shops will sell them nowadays. Many people will have them but it's getting them to you, that's the problem. Try car boot sales, ebay or computer clubs. Good luck.
