Diesel needs to be broken into a smaller state (tiny drops). In a petrol engine this doesn't happen. So the fuel cant burn. A diesel is timed for the slow ignition of the diesel fuel (that's where the sound comes from.) If you where to put petrol in a diesel it would ignite the sec. the injector fires it into the cylinder and the piston wouldn't be at top dead center. So when the petrol burned (exploded) it would fight the piston coming up. After that you would be screwed.

The two fuels are ignited differently, Diesel is compression ignition, petrol is spark ignition. Petrol in a diesel will ignite prematurly and not when the piston is near top dead center so will be the worst case of pinging you ever see, it will push the piston back down before it can go over top dead center. Diesel in a petrol may run if the engine is warm but with exsesive smoke and will probably cause major sooting in the engine. I havent eveen cosidered the different forms of fuel metering that each type of engine uses. Or the damage to the catalitic converter in a petrol car

Gasoline ignites more easily than diesel. In order for dieisel fuel to explode inside an engine it must be compessed 2.5 to 3 times as much as gasoline. A typical compression ratio for gas engines is 9:1, and for diesel is 25:1. Compession occurs when the fuel/air mixture is squeezed inside the pistion chamber on the upstroke of the pistion.
So if you put a more volitile fuel (gas) inside a higher compressed engine (diesel), you will literally burn the engine up when it is started.
Conversly, if diesel fuel is used in a gasoline engine, it will not ignite (not compressed enough) and may cause problems withe fuel delivery system.

The diesel will not ignite in the petrol engine and the petrol may probably explode while being injected into the diesel engine.

Diesel in a petrol engine just won't start/run, however, petrol in a diesel engine will destroy the engine in a very short space of time, IE "don't go there!
