My hound is an oc self groomer, he is kept inside, eats SolidGold, takes vit e and fish oil, no dry skin, no fleas, bathed every 8 weeks and my vet and I are stumped as to why and what to do. He gets e-collared when I am not home, told no when I am, and unfortunatly the enzimes from his saliva are turnning his coat red which I know to be very hard to get rid of. Any realistic ideas are welcome

He has been tested for diabetes and a thyroid disorder and both came back negetive. He is older and and has a very short coat so staying outside for long play times as cold as it is cannot be done right now. He has stuffies, froozen pb filled kongs, hooves, and knuckles to chew on, not to mention another dog and my little girl to play with. And he is only in the house w/o me for about 5hrs a day 4days a week. We have tried BitterApple, Phooey, and the like but either it only last 30sec or there is NOTHING he won't lick. Plus he has VERY short coat and some of the stuff either burned and he cried or it broke him out.

I think the the tear stain remover could remove the red staining from the coat, but that idea is based on the assumption that the red in the coat and tear stains is the same bacteria. To prevent him from doing it, follow the advice of the others and apply nast tasteing stuff to his fur. Then you should go ahead an take him to the vet to figure out why he's doing it so you can possibly treat the problem and not just the symptoms.
Good luck, I wish you and your dog well.

A spray or cream that tastes bad may help, Fooey is my favorite-tastes awful and stays on a long time. Try to divert his attention, give him a Kong stuffed with treats or a really big bone, something else to do in case he is bored. If it's just one spot, it could be that something was there irritating it, but that something is gone now and the licking is a habit. Sometimes if it's licking a joint, that could mean there's some pain or arthritis there, and glucosamine supplements or pain meds might help. As a last result, anti-anxiety medication could help.

I had an older dog who began licking alot sometimes on herself and sometimes would just lick in the air. She began to go to a corner and shake a little. The vet gave her a blood test and found she had developed diabetes. They are always thirsty. Does your dog drink a lot and go to his water dish often?
Sometimes licking can have a physical cause. Hope he is okay.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Try smearing tea-tree oil on the area he licks. It is SO bitter and horrible tasting, I can't imagine he would lick through that stuff. Not only that, but tea-tree oil is very good for the skin. My Dr. recommended to me for a skin condition. Check it out! GOOD LUCK!

how much time is the dog able to run and play outside and go for walks. it sounds like he may be bored and has started licking as a nervous habit. I would also take the dog to you vet and have him check out just to make sure there is no problem.

my old man dog(we call him that b/c he will b 13 soon and he gets around like an old man LOL) just started doing the liking thing to I got him some squeaker toys and chewy treats and he slowed down on it maybe your hound is board try some jalapeno juice if he don't stop it won't hurt him but it will make him think twice about licking.

I have the same promblem with my oldest dog,he will be 12 this year.He has allergys.
Have same problem with ecollar.
You can try this food=Nutro-"Nautral choice".
I have used on him&he has since quit scratching&pulling hair out. Some dogs are allergic too wheat&corn that are in dog foods&treats. The Nautral Choice is available in food&treats. You might try it.I'm gradually getting him away from the ecollar.
