My boyfriend is Italian(from Italy) and I want to try and make some really good Italian food for him since I know he gets homesick from time to time and he always talks about his mothers cooking.

The Classic Italian Cookbook by Marcella Hazan. It's very simple and easy to follow and has some great recipes!
Marcella is also considered by many top chefs to be one of the foremost experts on Italian food.

One of my all time faves is Molto Italiano by Mario Batali. Very authentic recipes. I also like Trattoria, by Patricia Wells
