A peculiar custom at this temple is that pilgrims offer hair as symbol of renouncing their ego at the feet of God. For this there are huge halls with barbers patiently shaving hundreds of heads.

hair is the one of the things which human can get rid of any number of times as they are sure it will grow again, but less is done by the people who are half bald - that's for fun part, now seriously to say that giving hair to god is the submission of oneself to the almighty and bear the laughing of people being bald head. u r offering all this shame to him and accept the ridiculous humbly.
now govt will make money everything, how can they every leave hair which comes freely to them, next time u go for a shave at Truth or to any church they will impose tax on the amount of hair u have - be careful

from my understanding about an age old practise, you shave of your hair to accept defeat at the hands of your conqueror gracefully. but history and people had depicted that in rather vulgar way. coming to the action rather than the way it was depicted, you submit your self to the ALMIGHTY and accepts his SUPREMACY over you and to direct you life through HIS almighty powers. this practise is not limited to Hindu pilgrimage centres, but as well some at christian pilgrimage centres in Tamil nadu.
The govt. comes into picture as it takes the headache to get ur hair shaved off and keep the business running by maintaining the place where the hair is shaved off. so to pump money into the system, it auctions of the hair to contractors who in turn channel them into the fashion ./ entertainment industry where there is high demand for it to make wigs and other assorted items. As well people who use them for making false hair sets that is used very extensively in the household by woman with waning hairlines.

It is a wish from a divotee that if he achives a thing or target, he will give his hair to god. It is a belief of people. When any one gives their hair, it is collected by the devasthanam authorities and sold in a auction. The hair then collected by them is further processed and used for making WIGS and also for medicine.
