Hi, Check out the "Dog Whisperer" TV program on the A&E channel. He is amazing and I can speak from experience, his advice works. I have a yellow Lab and he is the smartest dog I have ever had. He aims to please and has been very easy to train. JingJing is right when he tells you to make sure your dog gets lots of exercise. Labs are very active so one of the first tricks I would teach your dog is to fetch. Then you can throw the ball for him which will give him lots of exercise. They also love to swim if you live near any water. We have a large pond and 40 acres for ours to run on, and he sure does. Have fun and enjoy your dog. You made a great choice.

Training a dog is partly about conditioning the dog and partly about conditioning the owner. The dog needs to learn what is expected of them, they're happy to do what you want. The owner needs to learn how to communicate in a way that the dog can understand (their brains and senses are very different). I suggest an obedience class for both of you. If you can't make that time commitment, get a really good book, How To Be Your Dogs Best Friend is fantastic, and read it - soon.

Congrats on your baby. Chocolate Labs are really wonderful, I wish I could afford to keep herds of them!

First, check to see if there are any places in your community that does dog-training. Petco has pretty inexpensive classes, and this kind of formal training is invaluable for training owners as well as their dogs. But you could probably work on simple stuff like "sit" and "fetch" (and don't forget "let go" so that you don't end up in a tug-of-war all the time). Focus on rewarding him with treats and ear scratches when he responds the way you want him to.

I love Labradors, and they are very open to training (not like stubborn little lap dogs who think the world revolves around them). Also, take your dog out for lots of walks--these big dogs need lots of exercise so they don't go stir crazy. Good luck with your dog!

If you value your investment in your dog, and from your words you seem you do, perhaps you should consider enrolling him in a dogs training school in your area. They maybe a bit costly, but the return on your investment is worth every penny.

Good Luck!
