Very possible. It can be surprisingly difficult to explain the concept of the UNIX epoch and how computers represent time to someone with no technical background — even a very intelligent person. That's a recipe for confusion and media sensationalism. It's the same sort of issue as the Y2K bug, which didn't produce nearly as much idiocy as 2012. But I think that's less because of the nature of the problem and more because news (whether true or false) travels and mutates much faster now, due to the increased reach and depth of global communications. It's probably safe to assume that trend will continue to 2038 and beyond.
