I have been dating my boyfriend since the fall of 2005 and I am going to Italy to meet his parents in April of this year and I am very nervous because I want to make a good impression, since he is very close to his family. So does anyone have any advice on how I can impress his Mother ?
Details:
-I am 21(Junior in college) and he is 22(Senior)
-We met in college
-He is Italian and his whole family lives in Italy(He is just going to college in the US)
-He is super close to his Mom, he calls her almost every single day (which bugs me at times)
-He also always talks about his Mom and how good her food is, and when I cook for him, he says "that is good but my Mom...(makes it this way, adds this, ect.)"

Why does it bother you that he calls her everyday.
He sounds like a very caring guy.
I found that in a relationship, getting along with the in-laws is most important.
When you are in Italy, ask her how to make things.
Ask to help in the kitchen
Tell her that her son speaks of her often.
I know its hard sometimes hearing, my mom makes it this way. My Hubby use to do that to me. He now does it to his Mother about my cooking.
And I tell Him, DONT DO THAT. It is insulting. But I am allowed, we have been married for 25 years.
Best advice, is be yourself, have fun.

Show his mother the most respect you can (it has to be genuine). Show that you love and CARE about her son. Do not show your flesh too much... Further, help in the kitchen, ask questions about food preparation and cooking. Get up in the morning before everyone and just do something... Hey, it is going to be fun. Good luck and cheers.
PS: Think also that he as Italian male would not show someone to his family who is not worth it.

Guernica NAILED IT. Follow that advice to the letter. The only thing I can add is bring her a small gift, maybe a plant or flowers.
Definitely take Italian (even one semester) as an elective.

Make sure you're HUNGRY when you get to their place for dinner, and mange mange mange!
Beg her to teach you how to cook REAL Italian food.
Also DOTE DOTE DOTE on her son, in front of her. Compliment her on raising a son who's a real gentleman.
Make sure you know *something* about Italian cooking, but not too much, as you don't want to make her competitive. Know just enough for her to want to take you under her wing and teach you.
Learn how to greet her, say good-bye, and thank her in Italian. It doesn't matter if your pronunciation is bad, because she'll delight in correcting you.

Make sure you know he is the one for you first. Your love for him will impress them and shine through. When you meet them BE YOURSELF, don't try to be something you are not. If you don't do this they will pick up on it. Make sure and compliment them on raising a fine son, and tell the how much you love him. Then ask mom to give you advice on making her son happy forever.

He will always compare you to his Mom and that makes me sick! Just because you are not from Italy doesn't mean you can't cook it's just that this is the U.S.A. and we cook different. I would just be yourself and if that is not good enough for his family then oh well you are not dating them anyway! Good Luck!
