I am with you on this one. It is done just for a certain look on the dog or because AKC standards say they have to be done, but I think it is wrong.

Tail docking and ear cropping is a standard for some breeds. A lot of breeders know discourage it in a "pet". As for show dogs that is what helps to define the breed.
I would not have it done but look at it this way (at least w/ the tail) the breeder usual has this removed right after birth along w/ the dewclaws while the bone is still in a cartilage state so it does not bother the pup, and the mother will keep it clean so no infection occurs. Now in an older dog it is done a lot of time b/c the dog has "happy tail", where when they wag their tail they hit it in walls, furniture, etc. and the could break the tail or cause blood clots, then the tail is removed for health reasons. If it breaks it can cause nerve damage to the spine, and continuous surgery for a hemotoma could be life ending b/c the more you sedate a dog the more likely the are to not wake up.
As for the ears, no don't do it it's just for looks, no health concerns at all, in fact you are more likely to end up w/ problems b/c you had it done

basically today, it's based on the "breed standard" for the show ring and "the look". some countries are banning this practice (europe for example). long ago there were actual reasons. being a long time great dane owner/handler/breeder, danes were bred to hunt wild boar. they naturally have big floppy ears. cropping the ears kept them from getting torn up while hunting the wild boar. today it's more for the "look" that everyone's used to but more people are starting to show their danes uncropped for a more natural look. it takes a lot of work and taping to get the ears to stand properly after being cropped. i'm sure the other breeds that have this done are for the same basic reasons. tail docking is done when a puppy is about 3-5 days old and heals very fast. ear cropping usually has to be done by the time they are 12 weeks old if you want them to stand. cropping is done under anesthetic.

The practice of cropping ears and docking tail was common in breeds that were developed to hunt rodents. These dogs would chase rodents through brush and trees totally intent on catching that rodent. often they would end up with ripped ears or broken tails. By cropping the ears and docking the tails the dogs would not get hurt. Now they are not used for this purpose so it is not necessary

it is abusive, and painful
i've had 3 dogs in my life, 2 had docked tails (a cocker spaniel and a cocker spaniel/sheltie) this wans't by choice, when i got my puppy, she was 3 months old and they handn't docked her tail but offer, were they people CRAZY! she still has her tail and i'm glad, lol
but anyway, when they do tails, they usually do it so shortly after birth, the dog will NEVER remember the pain, which is good. if your gonna show the dog, you have no choice, but if its just gonna be a companion, please, leave the tail, they are cuter with them anyway! Joise spins hers in a circle when she's excited, all cindy can do is wag the nub (hers was docked) really really fast!

most of the cropping goes bad to old days when dogs had jobs...pitt bulls for one has the cut so bulls and dog fights don't injury the ears..it is wrong i wuld not have it done to any animal. some horses get bob tails also so their tail would'nt get catch up in the plow

Ive always found it creul aswell, theres no need to and i think owners do it more for the look of a certain breed rather then just accept them as they are.
