Even when I type this question I have to wait for it to catch up, and then it keeps flagging up programs not responding then it sends an error report. Any ideas what I can do to speed it up, it was fine yesterday.

Windows XP monitors the programs you use and regularly rearranges files so that your most frequently used applications can be loaded quickly. This process is known as prefetching. There are various adjustments that you can make to this by adjusting your system settings or tweaking the registry, but most are of negligible benefit: the single best thing you can do is defragmenting the prefetch data, so it will run more efficiently.

Click Start > Run and type “defrag c: -b”. Press [Enter] and your boot files will be optimised for you.

Slow PCs can be caused by a lot of things for example: lack of enough ram, lack of enough free space on your hard disk, a virus, and etc.
Try the following: install more memory (ram), remove some applications from your pc like games if you have alot of them or some application programs that you don't need, try and run an anti-virus software.
If you are running a very old operating system, try and upgrade it to the newer versions (only if possible).
Good luck!

Try defragmenting the hard drive, which could be causing things to run slowly. If you have more RAM available, then that will definitely help. Also, use a program like startup to close down unused background programs that run and take up memory.

Virus? Or is a virus scan going on in the background?
Alternatively, defragment it to put all the files back in the right order.
