Why do people think Dreadlocs are ugly?

I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I've seen a few postings where people ask how to start their dreads and people would reply by saying don't do it, its so ugly or they are so dirty. F.Y.I., it not that Dreadlocs are ugly and dirty, its the people who locked their hair and dont know how or dont want to take care of it. Even when it comes to Rastas, even though they dont go to the salon and tighten their dreads to make it look neat, its still not dirty because they too, wash their hair. Dreads for them is not for fashion, their hair is sacred and its a symbol and REAL rastas don't even show their dreads. Dreadlocs can be very sexy on a person when they know how to take care of it by washing and retwisting their roots or styling them. I personally feel that people with Caucasion like hair, shouldnt dread their hair because that is ugly, being that their hair is straight its rare to see someone with that texture hair with neat, tight locs...Look at these Dreadlocs:

dreads r a symbol of being apart from tha world thats tha main thing ,its not 4 fashion r wats in style right now its a religous symbol of tha rastafarian community,if u dont understand african and caribbean roots an culture then u wont understand it.its just wat u really choose some like tha spikes and side of there hair shave of,some like it low an neat,some like afro just alot of things.but dreads represent strenght,if u can stand up an say well i am going to separate my self from tha worlds pressure and be something different i must respect u

I don't think dreadlocs are ugly. I wouldn't personally do that with my hair, but I do think they look petty interesting and kind of cool. Just depends on who is trying to wear there hair that way. Just like any other 'hairdo'..some people look better in one kind then another.

i think people generalize dreadlocks as being dirty and ugly because they don't know how they're done and taken care of properly.
it's one of those things like tattoos or piercings, where people make assumptions because it doesn't follow the norm.
some people even go so far as to assuming that rastas and people with dreadlocks are bad and associated drugs such as marijuana. there is a lot of ignorance and prejudice in the world, and all you can do, no matter who you are, is try to fight it or live with it.
i personally, wouldn't get dreadlocks because i'm white and would look terrible with them. i do however have a lot of piercings and know what it's like to be judged by my appearance.

I think that it's the idea of having knoted and POTENTIALLY dirty/greasy/smelly hair. Fact is, many people DON'T take care of their dreads.

Hair is much easier to keep clean and healthy looking when its loose.

To each his own, I guess.

interior i'm only a collection of letters. a number of them would properly be gruesome, yet all of them get presented. a number of them are LOVE letters, and that i like interpreting them the most. they offer me wish. :) <3

they can be very attractive, yes, but i always think it is weird if a woman has them..they look better on men, no offense... also, if halfway through, you decide you dont like them, its pretty much tough luck...you cant get rid of them.. you have to cut them out and then you would have like, no hair...just dont bother...braid your hair instead..it is much prettier...

Okay, I'm convinced. I now feel all snuggy about dreadlocks. Bring it on. On second thought, can I have a blonde with long straight hair flowing in the breeze? Ahhhh, that's more like it.

Long dreadlocks are truly hideous on caucasian people. Seriously, they should be legally banned, just like bald caucasian men look stupid whereas bald black men can look good.
