Exactly what she said above. The design allows for the same area of edge to be in contact with the snow as a much larger straight ski on a much shorter ski. As a result of this turning/carving is much easier resulting in the ski doing more of the work.

they are shaped skis. they are widest at the front, narrowest by the boot and wider at the back. not the old straight skis
