You go to start, then to control panel, then to add or remove programs or software and then you click on the remove button

It seems that you are talking about removing the program from system tray which loads when you log into your account. Well I know it does take resources of you system and loads many application which you do not need during the startup.
Click on Start > Click on Run > Type "msconfig" without the quotes. > Press Enter.
You will come up with system configuration utility.
Click on the last tab which says "startup" on top. You have a list of checkboxes there with the name of the programs which loads during startup. I would suggest to keep only the antivirus and the firewall. You can remove the rest.
Also you can click on "services" tab beside "startup" and down below you will find a check box which says "hide all microsoft services. Put a check mark there and see what are the other services which has a check mark. You can remove some of the services from that list as well. If you are unsure about a service i would say simply google it up. It will give you a brief idea as what program its associated with so that you can decide whether to keep it or remove it.
