It is the Wiccans themselves who are the source of the misinformation.
I don't think there are many people left that haven't heard about the difference between Wicca and Satanism.
The reason for the confusion is due to Wiccans insistance on calling themselves "witches' and their religion "witchcraft".
The word "witch" has an evil connotation in every language on earth, including English, but for some reason Wiccans still insist on calling themselves "Witches" (with a capital "W") and their religion "Witchcraft". They feel that the reason people are afraid of them is centuries of "xtian propaganda" meant to defame them. But even if they went to a Bhuddhist, Hindu, or Muslim country and called yourself the equivalent in their language to the English word witch there, people would still be afraid.
Even a Satanist could be a witch, because a witch is simply a sorcerer of no particular religion. It really has less to do with "misinformed idioits" than common sense.

I don't believe they are the same. I am actually Pagan myself. Most knowledgable people know the difference. Most Christians would probably believe that they are the same or somewhat similar. Wiccans and Satanists are completely different.
Quite a few people I know really had no idea what a Wiccan or a Satanist believed. They went along with what they were told. Which is that they worship the devil and do odd evil things. Anyone with real intelligence would know that these things aren't true. These ideas about these religions were created by Chritians long ago, in an attempt to make the church popular and convert non-Christians. They say that anyone who isn't a Christian is wrong or must believe in the devil.

Probably there are some people who think those two are the same. What I think is more common though is that Christians think that everything non-Christian comes from Satan and that all religious (and non-religious) groups other than Christians are evil, false and being controlled by Satan "whether they know it or not". So when somebody says Wiccans come from Satan it doesn't necessarily mean they think Wicca and Satanism are the same, but they likely think they're both evil anyway because they're not Christian.
I personally realize that Wicca and Satanism are two very different religions and I have no problem with Wicca, it's a peaceful and beautiful religion.

I don't think there are many people left that haven't heard about the difference between Wicca and Satanism.
The reason is Wiccans insist on calling themselves "witches' and their religion "witchcraft". Gardner insisted Witch meant "Wise one" claiming the word derives from the Old English word "wicce". "Wicce" actually means "to bend", and this is where the word "wicker" comes from. The word "wicked" also comes from "wicce" (as in a wicked person being "bent").
The word "witch" has a nefarious meaning in every language on earth, including English, but for some reason Wiccans still insist on calling themselves "Witches" (with a capital "W") and their religion "Witchcraft". They feel that the reason people are afraid of them is centuries of "xtian propaganda" meant to defame them. But even if they went to Vietnam ( a predominantly Buddhist country) and said they were a Phuy Tay (Vietnamese for witch), people would still be afraid of them. Of course, a tiny few Wiccans have stopped calling themselves witches, but most probably enjoy the shock value wether they admit it or not.
Christians did not simply "invent the Devil" either. Every religion on earth has a concept of evil spiriits, including ones that existed thousands of years before Christianity...including ancient Celtic Pagan religions. A course in comparative religion at a local community college will probably clear up some of these misconceptions.
A witch is simply a sorcerer of no particular religion. Even a Satanist could be a witch. It really has less to do with "narrow minds" than common sense. For thousands of years witches were associated with evil in every culture on earth. Wicca was created by Gerald Gardner around the 1950's so he could be beaten by strong willed women according to Adian Kelly. Before that, there was no evidence that a religion like Wicca existed. No Book of Shadows was ever found even once during the witch trials in the Middle Ages. It's amazing how long Wiccans were able to get away with history revision (and still are) until people like Kelly and Hutton began to expose it's history.

I thought wiccan was more of a nature based life? Maybe that's what you're reffering to. But I know some people say witches are wiccan. I don't know if some people who are witches are also wiccans coincidentally or what, but I know it's not a satanist thing. Do witches and wicca have anything to do with one another? Not the evil conotation, which I know not all witches are as bad as they are percieved to be, but as a belief system.

Have you noticed the sheer number of people that just seem to cling to the idea that "different is wrong"? Well guess what, a good deal of "real" satan worshippers, not the highschool "let's trip on LSD and kill small animals because i can see satan right now" aren't that bad of people, but since they are different they cannot be accepted blah blah blah, i prefer wiccans and satanists actually, they don't go around door to door and try to encroach on your beliefs all the time. If you are wiccan i feel bad for you, move to canada.

During the sixties and seventies, Paganism got equated with Satan in the popular culture. Before that, of course, has always been the conciet that ONLY Christianity could possibly be right and that anything else (Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Shinto, Animism, Paganism, etc...) was wrong at best and Satanic at worst.
And it doesn't help that Christians seem to project their most ugly fantasies onto the religion either. It's easy for them to do because they've been told that anything non-Christian was Evil, so they project their own imaginings of evil on to whatever has been designated as "Evil". It's a common failing.

Contrary to what georgeewert asserts some of us practice forms of witchcraft that PREDATES Crowley & Gardner.
Not Wiccan tho. I am a Pict, and our practice dates back much much farther than the 1950's.
But back to your question. Yes, mainly misinformed Christians. NOT ALL Christians feel this way, some are well informed and I can respect thier choice to remain Christian. Everyone needs to follow their own path but should not criticize others who have chosen a different path.
In regard to killing animals, well, not as a sacrifice, but I will thank the goddess (and the animal) for providing meat for my table. Just as I also thank the goddess and the plant for providing sustinance as well. I will not kill as sport or because I fear or don't like something. It took me years but now even my husband will not kill a bee (he has a severe allergy) or spider. He calls me to catch them and take them outside where they will be happy.

Blessed Be! I don't know why people aren't more educated about Wicca. A cable program aired for a few years here that seemed to get people on the right track. There are some ministers that preach all of this satanic stuff to their congregations so people can get pretty confused. We have a School of Metaphysics and the fundamentalists think this is a bunch of satan worshippers, too. I hear you.

Ah yes another left over form the mess that the early Catholic Church made when it tried to lure many non-Christian religions into converting to Christianity. When they didn't convert either wholly or in part . The Church called them SATAN worshipers, And it has stuck . Even though the Christian Church still uses the rites and practices of those religions that they condemn.
Christianity is a Sept of Judaism which has its own magical system( Quabblah).
