1. they are insecure about their own ideas
2. to reinforce their beliefs
3. because they are jerks
4. have no respect
5. are too big headed to realize the POSSIBILITY that they MIGHT be wrong and you MIGHT be right
6. they hate your god because of their OWN personal issues (which i have to say is NO basis for lack of faith)
7. they disagree with the bible, Koran, etc. (which, AGAIN, i have to say is NO basis for lack of faith)

I'm guessing it's because if they can convince themselves by searing their conscience over with a hot iron that there is no God then they feel justified to over-ride their guilt and continue on in their pride, rebellion and self-will and sins. They want to silence that voice of morality called the conscience so they can better enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. Also, it's like they are drawn to God in spite of themselves but like abusers, they may connect in a backwards way at times. (That's why I never take things too personal here!) I have heard many testimonies where folks were meaner the more they were under conviction and they might say they were not about to go to church and then lo and behold they found themselves getting ready to go and then telling themselves they wouldn't pray but then they ended up getting saved. God knows what He's doing! Just keep praying and believing the Lord of the harvest will help us gather some more sheaves in before it's over with.
I actually enjoy taking to atheists (who are straight) than to most others on here with the exception of a very few Christians.
Great question by the way. Haven't seen you for a while.
God bless.

I don't think many people mock a god, they mock BELIEFS that don't make sense to them. I guess they just think it's so weird and silly to actually believe illogical things found in religions. Christians think Hindu beliefs are strange and silly, Pagans think Christian beliefs are strange and silly etc. Everyone thinks their own beliefs make perfect sense and find other beliefs strange. Add immaturity and arrogance to that and you get someone who mocks and looks down on other people's beliefs rather than just respect the fact that we don't all believe the same.

Same reason I would mock someone who believed that the Tooth Fairy really existed. Problem is, people have never run a plane into a building because they believed the Tooth Fairy wanted them to. Belief in god is dangerous, and pointing out the absurdity of belief in god is not only necessary but essential to the long term survival of our society (yeh, that's a bit overblown, but true nonetheless).

Well if you believed in a vengeful skydaddy ready to send evil demons to torture you, I think you would not mock. I can and should mock because the truth is that God does not exist. The whole thing is Bogus, in spite of what George Bush thinks.

Elitism and Hypocrisy. For example, christians love to condemn people to hell who don't believe in their god. They have no problems mocking other people's beliefs, but take great offense at anyone pointing out problems with their beliefs.

Why do people cheer for a Luke Skywalker they know is fictional? Why do people laugh at cartoons? I don't mock God. I mock your limited idea of God, and I do it because I think it's hilarious.

Because deep inside of them they know that there missing something from there life! - The Answer: the love of The Father God, The Son Jesus Christ and The Holy Ghost! We know we are Christians if love is the dominating force in our lives. "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and Knoweth God...for God is love" (1 John 4:7,8) Neither death nor life, neither angels or demons, neither the present not the future, nor any powers, neither height not depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I guess it has something to do with asserting and affirming our beliefs. For the same reasons that people who believe in God are glad to talk about it, people who don't believe in God often want to talk about their beliefs too.
It's like that joke: An atheist and a Christian are out fishing. The atheist pulls up a fish with the inscription, "I do not exist. -- God." He immediately turns to his friend and says, "See? What did I tell you!"
