I got a tattoo about 7 years ago, I never got around to researching this. My tattoo seemed to have healed wrong. It kinda sticks out (if you know what I mean), kinda like reverse brael. Almost bumpy but I wouldn't say bumpy. I'm just trying to discribe it. Anyone who knows anything about tattoo's should understand what I mean. Anyways, my question is, is it something I did when it was healing or was it something the tattoo guy did wrong? I wish I had a picture of it but you can't really tell it sticks out unless you touch it or look really close.

I doubt it's infected, it looks great, no dis-coloration, I'm not sick. Keep in mind I have this for 7 years.

it's all black, I never once scratch it. I'm thinking you are right that he went too deep or used too much ink.

it sounds like it healed with a scar. any number of things could have happened. the tattoo artist could have tattooed too deeply. or you may not have kept it moisturised enough. as long as it looks okay i wouldn't worry about it.

There is really nothing you can do to make your tattoo heal 'faster'. Treat it as a flesh wound... thats really what it is! The ONLY time your tattoo should be covered is right after it is done- your tattoo artist will place some sort of bandage over it. That bandage can be taken off in 1-4 hours. After that, you do not bandage it again. Keep a thin layer of A and D ointment or Bacitracin on it for a few days... DO NOT use a grease based ointment like Vaseline!! NO Neosporin!! Just the A & D or Bacitracin. H2Ocean is also a wonderful after care lotion, made especially for your healing tattoo. But NO bandages!!!! Dont rush this healing process. You can mess up your tattoo and it wont look its best. Just be patient!

what color is your tattoo? some people react to certain pigments more than others.

is the raising only a in certain color? in that case it may have been a sensitivity to the pigment. reds, yellows and some blues are the most common to react to.

if the raising is all over and the skin feels sensitive, it could be that the artist went too deep with the pigments and your skin built up scar tissue during the healing process. another sign of this are raised areas with lightened pigmentation. when the ink is applied too deep, it can "push out" of the skin and leave blank or lightened areas.

another option - are the raised areas opaque?.. cloudy looking? did you scratch your tattoo a lot while ti was healing? and scabbing or scarring of a tattoo or it's area can result in a build up of sking over the injured area giving an opaque sheer to the tattoo. this usually happens when someone has been scratching tha aea a lot or when an artist failed to apply the pigments consistently throughout the tattooed area.

unfortunately after 7 years.. it's gonna be really hard to find the fulprit!

I have quite a few tattoos and mine are usually fine, but every once in a while they'll get "bumpy" and very itchy. I believe it's because that area was worked too much. The one on my back will get like that because I stretch my back too much and I have to put lotion on it to make it not hurt. The two on my forearm do it sometimes too, same with my husbands. And the one on my wrist too. But like I said maybe you're stretching it or something. You probably can't answer this but, where is it at? And does it usually hurt after stretching that area? If it does I would suggest using Lubriderm non-scented lotion to make it feel better if it hurts. Also does it stick out constantly? If it does then it could or could not have anything to do with what I told you. I know the one on my husbands arm stick out sometimes since he got the tattoo. But the artist finished the tattoo and then the guy came back 5-10 minutes later and added more. Anywho I hoped that help some.................................. After seeing the additional details. It could just be what I have told you, there's nothing wrong with it, and there's nothing to prevent it. The only tattoos on me that don't get like that are the ones on my thighs, because they don't bend or stretch, and the one on my side. All the ones on my arms, back, and ankles hurt from time to time when I use it too much. Like I said earlier, hope that helped.

Sounds like it's fine. My husband has one that does the same thing. It's all good. I would recomend for the next tattoo that you get, that you should get some Tattoo Goo. You can get it in your tattoo shop or on their website. Cuts healing time in half and helps with itching, redness, and the stingyness.
Hope this helps and good luck!

It may have healed wrong or your artist may have ran the needle to deep. What you probably have is scar tissue likely caused by one of the two reasons listed above. Is there are reason you are asking, looking to get more ink and want to be sure it doesn't do the same thing?

From personal experience: Tats get "raised" in certain spots because of 2 reasons that I have found. 1) as the previous poster stated it may be an area that was over workes with the needle and scar tissue has developed and 2) sometimes they get a 3D feel when you are dehydrated, no sh*t.

hope this helps hombre!
