Covering the food can help increase the speed at which something cooks and help cook it more evenly. However, the biggest benefit is it will help keep food from splattering all over your microwave which can happen from time to time. But is not totally necessary and every once in a while I do cook things uncovered.

Covering your food in the microwave has absolutely nothing to do with the cooking process, it simply prevents splattering all over the inside of your microwave

The main reason for covering food in the microwave is so it won't splatter all over and make a mess.

I always do since it reduces splattering all over the microwave.
I have one of those plastic microwave "covers," and like it a lot.
I also sometimes use paper toweling, plastic wrap or a paper plate over the food dish.

Yes.
Microwaves, the waves on the light spectrum, vibrate polar bonds. In essence, they boil water contained in all foods.
You cover your dishes for the following reasons:
Your food will dry out
Your food will explode and leave a bloody mess

If you don't mind that food will splatter all over the walls of the microwave, then I guess the answer is NO.

I don't think so. They only reason I know is just to avoid mess, but what I heard is not To put food on plastic containers, always make sure to use glass, so I do that.
