Is it necessary to cover the food while microwave cooking/heating?

While heating or cooking is it necessary to cover the food, If yes, Why?

Covering the food can help increase the speed at which something cooks and help cook it more evenly. However, the biggest benefit is it will help keep food from splattering all over your microwave which can happen from time to time. But is not totally necessary and every once in a while I do cook things uncovered.

I don't think so. They only reason I know is just to avoid mess, but what I heard is not To put food on plastic containers, always make sure to use glass, so I do that.
