Yes, firefighting is a high risk job compared to other fields of work. But as you will find, the training recieved will help you survive and recognize potentially hazardous situations. Two things may comfort you on this subject. 1) The feeling you get when saving someones life or property is like no other. 2)I know alot more retired firefighters than I remember fallen brothers.

I think you mean do I have a chance of dying as a firefighter. Yes - if you go in harm's way, you do increase your odds. But, you're trained and you have equipment, and you would recognize the danger, decreasing your odds of dying compared to average joe. But you can still answer the last alarm as a firefighter as The 343 could tell you. You're more likely to die from all the nasty food you eat in the firehouse so start working out.

No - if you follow all the rules and orders you receive you will be alright. It's only the one's who take chances that get hurt. Be smart about it. Learn from the old timers and follow thier lead, don't get in a hurry to get on top or be noticed. Faster promotions comes with intelligence not being a fool and risk taker.

There's no guarantee either way, so if you're not selfless enough to take that chance I wouldn't bothere even pursuing it.
