Common Hair Mistakes

 Washing hair on a daily basis.
Regularly washing your hair strips it of essential sebum (hair's natural moisturiser) and can leave it dry and brittle. If you have naturally oily hair use a mild, pH-balanced shampoo. When washing your hair don't rub the scalp vigorously as this will stimulate the oil glands to produce more sebum.
 Leaving shampoo and conditioner in your hair.
Shampoo and conditioner that is not thoroughly rinsed out of the hair is the worst culprit for bad hair days. It counteracts styling products, leaves your hair looking dull, limp and unmanageable. Try to rinse your hair for an extra couple of minutes after shampooing and conditioning.
 Not trimming your hair every 6 weeks.
The tip of each hair can be 10 per cent weaker then the root, making it more vulnerable to breakage and split ends. Having the tips trimmed every 6 weeks helps to maintain the condition of your hair and its style.
 Rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel.
The action of rubbing you hair with a towel actually roughens the hair cuticle, which can lead to frizzy, flyaway hair.
 Blow-drying hair until completely dry.
Overheating your hair makes it susceptible to breakage and strips it of shine. A better idea is to blow-dry hair until it's 80% dry and then let it air dry, naturally. Alternatively use a leave-in conditioner or styling product that protects your hair from heat styling. Also, hold the hair dryer at least 30 centimetres away from your hair.
 Not using products recommended from your hairdresser.
Many women misdiagnose their hair type and subsequently purchase the wrong hair products to style hair. Using the right product will help to recreate that special salon style.
 Leaving the salon without knowing how to dry and finish your hair at home. If you want to recreate the look produced in the salon, ask your hair stylist for a step by step guide enabling you to style it at home.
 Not using a clarifying shampoo once a week.
Everyday pollutants cling to hair and leave a thin coat of grime that dulls and weighs down the hair. Using a clarifying shampoo once a week will give hair a residue free fresh start. Michelle recommends the new Kerastase Soleil range.
Swimming
Before entering a pool, wet your hair so your hair will soak up the initial water instead of the chlorinated water.
When swimming where a cap to protect your hair from chlorinated water, if you choose not to wear a cap make sure you shampoo and condition your hair right after you are done swimming.
Combing/Brushing
Hair is most fragile when it is wet so avoid brushing or combing when it's wet, or else it will cause breakage, wait until your hair is almost completely dry before brushing it.
Avoid using plastic brushes/combs which create static electricity
Shampooing and Conditioning
After you are shampooing make sure that you thouroughly rinse out your hair to remove any shampoo residue that may be left. Shampoo residue may dry your scalp/hair and or attract dirt. It is recommended that you only lather once to avoid drying your hair out.
For dry hair only wash it 2-3 times a week.
When conditioning your hair, try to spread conditioner evenly through out your hair and leave it in for a couple of minutes before rinsing out your hair.
Put the conditioner in at about an inch away from the scalp, the roots of your hair contain the most oils and usually don't need the extra conditioning.
Be gentle when shampooing and conditioning, don't use excessive force rubbing your hair, remember hair is most vunerable when wet.

Method of Conditioning
1.After shampooing gently squeeze the excess water.
2.Comb the hair with the fingers or with wide toothed comb from the roots to the ends gently. Remove tangles.
3.Apply little conditioner and rub the conditioner through the hair with the fingers. Never rub on the scalp.
4.Keep it on the hair for 5 minutes
5.Now gently massage the hair to loosen the conditioner.
6.Rinse the hair and remove all traces of conditioner. Now dry the hair.
Conditioners used for different types of Hair
Damaged hair - Protein Conditioner
Dry hair - Moisturising or Intensive Conditioner
Oily hair - Any normal (oil free) conditioner
Purpose of Conditioning
The key to beautiful hair is a beautiful scalp (massage scalp firmly in rotating and circular movements). If it is kept clean and normal balances are maintained it performs its functions well. Each hair is made up of a very delicate fibers.
Conditioning is a way of giving the hair a more intense kind of nourishing treatment. It helps to protect hair from counter acting dryness, making it smooth and easier to manage.
Treatments with conditioners helps to correct the effects of poor hair care. Henna is a good conditioner. Treatment with henna is good for the hair.

First off, you need to make sure you have a brush that either is wooden, plastic, or natural bristles. If it has synthetic bristles, it WILL give you static. You should also get an acidifying conditioner, like Nexxus Ensure, since that will take the static away. Or, you can rub a dryer sheet on your hair. That works too!

Try Combing your hair instead of brushing it and use a leave in conditioning balm (like the anti frizz panteen pro-v one, not spray)
