don't use the old-fashioned food coloring liquid. You need to get Wilton icing colors. It is a VERY concentrated gel. You may need more than one bottle. They are available at craft stores that carry Wedding supplies (ie Michael's) and at some larger grocers.

You have to buy paste food coloring. Get Red Red because the Christmas red is a little on the orangey side not a pure red. You have to keep adding paste color to icing till the color is deep enough and they will be darker after they dry. It may take a whole bottle of it to get it dark. Also unless the formula has changed, it really taste awful. Just a note too, when I wanted black icing I would make chocolate icing and then add the black. It would, taste good and didn't take as much paste to color it.Good luck.

Pink is a color made by mixing red and white...you may not be able to get the true red you're looking for if you're just using food coloring...you need the coloring that bakers use.

Go to your bakery where you buy bakery products. Ask them to sell you some of their paste type colors. With (red ,green , yellow )you will be able to make just about any color you need . just like the ink in your printer (you can mix them with white to get the color you need. It's very strong so try it before you under take to mix it.
Good luck jim b

The problem with liquids is they get too watered down. Go to a local bakery/ restaurant supply store. They have powdered food pigments that should give you real good colors.

I have always used a professional coloring. You can buy them most places. They are much stronger then the liquid which is watered down. they will not give a true color.
