Evolution is a theory and is given credence by supporting evidence, science does not exist on infallible facts like a religion. We have best guesses at most because one day someone might come along with new evidence or observations that cast doubt on previous evidentiary material providing a full answer to a hypothesis. It will never be written in stone as truth. But evidence in support of the theory may continue to come forth as research progresses, increasing the probability of the theory as a probable answer to the question "where do we come from?".

edit: "No one has observed evolution" is not an argument against the theory as non-viable. Prove that our young grow. Set up a camera and place a young animal in front of the camera, mark it's starting measurements and then watch the animal for a set duration, say 24 hours, will you see discernible growth? Dependent on the organism you will, bacteria up to plants, most possibly; mamals, less likely. If you observed a baby elephant for 24 hours and there was no change in its measurement after 24 hours, would this mean elephants don't grow? Evolution does not take place overnight, but can be discerned from phenomena such as viral immunity to new drugs. Or bacteria developing resistance to anti-bacterial drugs, these are just simple processes in comparison to the evolution of species. It's a matter of perspective, that I think some people do not appreciate.

Technically, it can never be proven, only disproved. In principle, scientific theories are always tentative, and subject to corrections or inclusion in a yet wider theory.
In science, a theory does not mean an unsubstantiated guess or hunch, as it can in everyday speech.
A theory is a proposed description, explanation, or model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation.

What that means, is that the theory of evolution is the best model for describing how life has come to be as it is now. Note: It does not describe how life started as many creationist, through their ignorance, like to imply.

And for those that say we would have to wait millions of years to see it proved: It has already been seen in the mutation of Virii. When a virus becomes immune to antibiotics, that is evolution at work.

its already been proven, its just that fundies refuse to accept it. they prefer to think we came from a man made from mud and a woman of rib whose descendants would have to have had large scale incest, and then that the world got flooded and all living species survived on a single boat and humanity was reestablished there by another incestuous orgy between noah's family members.
it's plain incredible how people prefer that stuff to a proven theory.
and if u still keep going on about the word theory, understand it has a different meaning in a scientific context.

As far as I'm concerned it's has already been proved what do you think really happened to my legs? God just made that crap up about making me crawl on my belly for the rest of my life. Over the years evolution just melted them away. But I'm making a comeback trying different things. Right now I'm trying a banana. It's worked out pretty good so far. I love it when people try to peel me. Hisszzzzzzzzzzz

Depends on what you mean by "proven"

Evolution as a process has already been proven to exist.
As to an all-encompassing, concrete, immutable "thing" called "Evolution" then no, it will never be proven--but then only Creationists refuse to accept anything less.

Actually there is more evidence supporting natural selection than the great flood. So I guess will evolution ever be proven? How can you prove the myths of the bible?

haha! anyway, I am sure that one day scientists will get together for some few months, then come out of some giant auditorium with smiles from east to west, thinking they have wound it all up. Telling everyone of some great discovery or new age acceptance of evolution. Then God will come from the clouds and they will say "uh-oh, you think we should go back into that auditorium and hide under the seats?"

to fundamentalist Christians no. how every there is a great deal of time missing between the creation of the Physical universe and the creation of ADAM and EVE who met other tribes outside of the GARDEN of EDEN after they were exiled.

It could be etched on stone tablets and thrown down in the middle of a city via lightning bolts and some people will not agree that is has been proven.
