You make good points, nothing I'd argue with, -but the sort of thing your "average Joe" is not supposed to consider. The cause of much crime is the inequalities between people, regardless of any temporary, or even long term "bad economy". You well expose what is behind the American system of justice, -and it is nothing to do with practicalities for the best, for ordinary people, but an enforcement of a status quo, which amounts to slavery, ....and we shouldn't forget a vital point, which is that prisons in the US are often run as government contracts, not actually by the government, so the more prisoners, the more the profit for those government contractors who "look after" the prisoners. Those same contractors often also profit from war, -so for them the more prisoners the better, and likewise for wars. -and it is those sorts of people who are running the show, far more than any President, or party does
