Hi,
Organise a treasure hunt. A few hours before the party think out a course the kids can walk (preferably with some bushes that they ahve to go through and some other "obsticles"). Make the course not too long, about 15 min walking is usually enough. Tie read ribbons or pieces of string along the route, make sure the ribbons or pieces of string are not to far from each other. The kids should see the next string from where they are. At the end of the route have a little "treasure chest" with little goodies like candy and other things your kids might enjoy. You can even have a little activity at the treasure chest.
When the party starts and all the presents have been unpacked, explain what's going to happen and have an adult present with the group to make sure everybody stays safe. Also set some ground rules at the start, like not running away from the group, etc. Then walk the route and enjoy!!
I did this and it was a great success. The suspense for the kids is infectious, eventhough I knew where we were going.
Happy birthday to your 4-year-old by the way!!
Take care

I agree with the first answer....either bowling, a pizza party, or the zoo. I have a nephew, now six, that has been bowling for a few years now....it started when he attended a bowling birthday party. He got to sign a bowling pin for the birthday boy and he was pretty estatic about that.

The toddlers in my family always get a party themed in their favorite cartoon character. We get a moon bounce, pinata, and lots of candy. clowns and migicians are stupid the kids don't even pay attention and most of them are scared of clowns.

We had fun with a special train cake that we made.
we
-bought miniature bread-loaf pans to make train cars.
-then went to the candy store to purchase fun candies to decorate the cake and scene with.
-used foil-covered cardboard to creat the scene with leftover cake used for a mountain in the center (covered in chocolate frosting), string licorice for the train tracks, coconut dyed with green food coloring for the grass, and other fun candies
- During the birthday celebration everyone got to decorate their own train car
- we took a picture
- and then ate our cars. It was a lot of fun and not too messy.
