Personally, I was a theist as a child, but as I grew up and and my thinking matured, theism didn't provide satisfactory explanations for why things happened anymore. I accepted that I didn't know and couldn't know the answers to existential question, and so became agnostic.

I was raised very strict traditional Catholic, and went thru a period of being a militant athiest in early adulthood. But I couldn't deny the supernatural, as it is part of my experience. I've explored many paths and have cobbled together a sort of neo-panthiesm based on the idea that God is the energy and conscousness which pervades the Universe. This goes well with my mystical expereicnes and also with my scientific bent, particularly recent discoveries regarding fractal geometry and the behavior of subatomic particles.
Whether or not we can experience spiritual matters seems to be a matter of how one's brain is wired. About 80% of experimental subjects had a mystical experience when their temporal lobes were stimulated, 20% did not. I believe that this is because 80% of us have the brain wiring to experience supernatural matters, similar to how most of us can perceive colors but about 10% of the population is colorblind. However, an athiest friend of mine (and probaybly one of the 20% non-experiencers) believes that this "proves that God is all in people's minds"

The belief of a loving god and the suffering of the innocent is not compatible. I learned the details of suffering. For instance it is one thing to know that there was a Holocaust but it is another to know the details of how these people suffered. No powerful loving god could allow this. I also learned about archeology, anthropology and evolution.
One other thing was the problem of natural evils like tornadoes, hurricanes and diseases. Without god these things are just natural occurrences but put god into the picture and they become evils. Because a god that could create all of this could have created without things that would harm the innocent.
If there is a supernatural being of some kind he she or it does not love us and does not care. I don't believe in a loving god and anything lesser does not concern me.

I was not raised in any faith. I was a 'born again" Christian at age 12. At 20 I was an Atheist. At 28 a rational thinking Christian. Why did I come back? God came looking for me and I KNOW that He does exist. Only 2 things I know in this life, I exist and God exist, all else is open for debate.

What do I accept as true with theists about? in words of theism, no longer something in any respect. we would agree on particular moral ideas (it is no longer effective to scouse borrow, or kill human beings, for instance) yet we do not agree on the position the excuses for those ideas come from. shall we agree on rather some issues, yet variations in justification create some hardship.

I thought of all the ways in which religion doesn't make sense. That started things rolling.
