Yes, it can hurt, but if you are moving in that direction in your relationship it will have to happen sometime. But she must be ready too. If you truly love each other, and care as much (if not more) about each other's feelings and well-being than your own, you both should have no problem talking about it. Just don't force the issue and pressure her, it could very well ruin the relationship.
Sex is a two way street and you both have to be ready.
Keep in mind (and this is a religious or political statement, it's just reality), that feeling you are both 'ready' should mean two things:
1) You truly love and trust each other completely, and you feel you can be with this person the rest of your life (married or not), and
2) You are ready, willing, able, and responsible enough to deal with the possible consequences of sex, specifically pregnancy (no birth control is 100% effective, even if used properly) and the emotional ties this will create (especially since this will be the first time for both of you.)
P.S. - I would follow good advice from the other ladies answering your question, as I am a guy and personally would not know how to properly address the physical needs of making your girlfriends experience as painless as possible. Be gentle and listen to her actions and responses to what you do, is the best I can offer. Perhaps getting a book on the subject and reading it together as well, then you both can learn what to do together.
Just remember to "do it" for the right reasons.

Very Sweet, but just go very gentle with her and make sure that there is enough lubrication so she does not tear other than that take your time she should be alright unless you are the size of a horse...then you might have a problem...LOL!
Good Luck and wear protection, even though you both are virgins you don't want her to get pregnant!

Some girls do hurt the first time, just go slow and be careful, make sure you use a condom. Get the lucricated kind, that should help a little. Let her decide when to proceed. take care of both of you.

Okay...you are ready, but is she? You both need to discuss this, because if she isn't ready to go to the next level...you need to wait until she is. And yes it does hurt, but if you take it slowly and easily it can be a lot less painful.

It a good pain if its done right don't force it. Take your time with her because by both of you being virgins if you force you can hurt yourself.
PROTECT YOURSELF AND HER USE CONDOMS AND LUBRICATE IF YOU NEED IT
