Ceremony. Ceremony doesn't accomplish anything spiritually, it is merely a notch on the belt of those who participate. It is a way to mark their progress. All real progress is within and outer ceremony is only for "show".

The only kind of Christian is a 'Born Again' Christian... 'born again' has become a label for certain Christian groups to help them identify themselves, but the only way for someone to be a Christian is to be reborn. The above reference to John 3 is correct (born of water and the Spirit). Another great passage that illustrates this concept is Romans 6:1-14. For the sake of brevity, I'll keep it to verses 1-4, which is more specific to baptism:

Rom 6:1-4 (NIV) What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Jesus was alive, was crucified, buried, and 3 days later was resurrected from the dead. I was baptized when I was 22 in a jacuzzi... 11:30 pm on a Thursday night. The old me got in the jacuzzi... I was dunked under the water. At that point, through my faith in God and in Jesus, my sins were forgiven - the old me died. When I came up out of the water, I was spiritually resurrected - 'born again'.

In the New Testament Jesus explains being born again like
putting away the old self and expressing a new life with God.

Baptizing is not mandatory but if you have repented your sins to the Lord, ( "Born again")you will find Baptizing will be on your agenda. I know my experience of Baptism was wonderful, I felt like a new person and I was!

The Christian use of the term is derived from the third chapter of the Gospel of John, where Nicodemus visits Jesus:

Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God."
Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again."
Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit."
-John 3:1-5 (New Revised Standard Version)
(Note that some translators consider "born from above" to be a better translation than "born again".)
Consequently, most Christian denominations hold that a person must be born again in some sense in order to be a Christian, and thus that all who are true Christians are in fact born again, whether they describe themselves as such or not. The Roman Catholic Church, for example, considers that "Baptism is ... the sacrament by which we are born again of water and the Holy Ghost." [1], though the term is not frequently used by Catholics. This is also the belief held by Eastern Christianity, Anglicanism, and Lutheranism, among other Christian traditions. However, the term itself is most frequently used by Fundamentalist, Pentecostal, and Evangelical Protestants, where it is often associated with an intense conversion experience and an encounter of the individual with the power of God. Many Christians who are "born again" in this sense deny that those without such an experience are true Christians.

Because if they were Christians before, and were baptized, and fell short of sin, they need to repent. And also getting baptized is like being born and start fresh like an infant does

Being born again means that you have died to your old way of life (the selfish one in which you did what you wanted) and you are starting over to do God's Will first in your life. Being baptized is the public declaration that you have dedicated your life to doing God's Will first. The Bible says we cannot serve both God and man (that includes ourselves) and that if we are not for God, we are against him.

Baptism is the key to salvation. SO SAYS THE CHURCH. You can be 'born again' or not. There are many forms of changing your life and following Christ. We do not all use the term "born again". You can have all of the fluffy religious experiences you want, but you must be BAPTIZED.

This is a personal preference.

Being "born again" is where the reward is at. Being baptized is symbolic of the event and it's also a public proclamation of your decision to intentionally turn away from selfishness and toward whatever God wants for you.

First let me say, you are spiritually baptized when you become born again. The water baptism isn't for salvation, it is the first act of obedience to God and is a public testimony of your salvation and is also for unbelievers. It convicts. But in saying that...Being born again means "born from above". When Christ told Nicodemus about being born again, Nicodemus didn't understand it either. It is having the Spirit of God literally take up residence within your spirit. It's like putting gas in the car. If the car has no gas in the gas tank, then it cannot run. Without the Spirit of God within us, we don't "run" as we were designed to. When you recieve Christ, the Holy Spirit enters your spirit and puts gas in your gas tank and then you can run the way you were designed to...in communion with God and being led by Him.

The correct translation is born from above. some people make an exclusionary religion out of the erroneous english translation of the word "again" which is Greek # 509. You will find # 509 in the Greek dictionary means "from above" in the Strong's concordance.

so then if it is read properly you can understand we must be born from above, which simply means we must be born into the flesh from heaven.

Not all souls consented to this order from God. Those who refused to be born of woman are spoken of in Jude.
