I have some US stamps left over from a recent trip to the states. They're enough to send postage to the UK, so can I use them to send back to American addresses from England? Can anyone confirm this is ok? Has it worked for anyone else?

I am sorry, but the answer is "no."

When you send mail from any country, you must use that country's postage stamps. The only thing I know you can do is to send a letter to a friend in the States and enclose your U.S. postage stamps, asking the friend to reimburse you for them.

He or she can use the stamps to write to you!

All good answers and all true - it is not possible to use the stamps of one country in another. If you do use them the recipient in the US will have to pay a fine equal to twice the cost of the postage, so if the postage was say 5 pounds the fine would be 10 pounds (equivalent in US dollars) and the parcel or letter would be sent by the cheapest (and slowest0 method; surface mail taking weeks to get there if not months.

Send the stamps back to him or her.

See link below for the Universal Postal Union.

Save them as collector's items or use them on your next trip to the US. In the US (also Puerto Rico and Guam), the stamps never expire. In the UK, you must use UK stamps. You cannot even use Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, IOM stamps on the UK mainland.
