Firstly, it isn't Microsoft XP and Microsoft Vista, it's Windows XP and Windows Vista. Microsoft owns Windows though.

The difference is, that Vista is the brand new Operating System bought out by Microsoft. Its the new program in the line of Operating Systems (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Xp, Windows ME etc...).

Windows Xp is the one bought out before Vista. Although most people can't wait to get Vista, you are better off waiting a few months before you get it. As with Windows XP, the first version that they bring out, will not have many security fixes, and other things. It is a proper version, but there may still be things wrong with it.

Once Windows finds out what is wrong, they will fix it, and bring out a newer version. Probably Vista Service Pack 2.

Hope this helps =)

Windows XP is the current "new" version on the market right now. When Windows Vista becomes available, it will have more programs, more controls, and more functions than Windows XP. The only problem with Windows Vista will be that you have to have a DVD-ROM installed in your computer in order to use it. It's a more high-tech version of Windows XP with more graphics and such.

from what i've read so far the difference is , its easier to organize the things you have on your computer with vista, and more parent controls. So if have no children and don't care to organize your computer more, no need to get it.
